At an Intersection Named After an English King and a Saint
Six Sentence Story: Part 9.1 Flower Power
“Bonne soirée mon ami,” Pierre is beaming smiles tonight, and Nick-the-Gatekeeper replies, “Καλησπέρα Πιέρ μου.”
And I’m almost, but not studiously contemplating why Cyrillic-looking letters sound like warm gravelly earth when letters Pierre pronounces in French …
and my thoughts are interrupted when Nick greets me, “Good evening, Brigid.”
I hand him the pink double peony that I took from the vase at Arpège … he smiles as he inhales its fragrance.
“Thank you,” he says, and motions his hand toward the three downward steps with a you-may-enter gesture.
Two women standing in the queue, soaked by the steady rain notice this and say “Did you see that? We should have brought peonies for the Gatekeeper so we didn’t have to stand out here in the rain.”
And soon a tongue-rapid discussion breaks out in the queue as to where peonies can be bought at 1 o’clock in the morning.
